Border shrubs
Shrubs are woody plants which form the foundation of most beds and borders, adding shape and structure while boasting a range of valuable ornamental features. They are a varied and versatile group offering a range of foliage shapes, sizes and colours, beautiful flowers, fruits, berries, vibrant bark and more. Evergreen shrubs retain their leaves all year round, providing a permanent framework for your garden, while deciduous varieties shed their leaves in a beautiful autumnal display leaving a silhouette of bare stems over the winter before coming back into leaf again in spring. The broad aim when choosing border shrubs would be to choose larger-growing varieties for the back of the border and progressively smaller varieties towards the front. Certain specimen shrubs with particular features may be used to draw the eye, ground cover plants can be used to cover unsightly patches of soil while spiny shrubs can be used to keep unwanted visitors at bay.
