Perennials for the front of a border
The front and edges of borders are ideal for showing off smaller perennials, perhaps interspersed with swathes of flowering bulbs for an informal, cottage style garden. Perennials help soften the edges of a patio, decking or lawn, especially if allowed to slightly spill over their planting site. They can also help hide the bare stems of taller plants in the middle and back of the border. One of the best evergreen perennials for the front of a border are heuchera with their interesting, colourful, lobed leaves and spikes of bell shaped flowers, and their smaller cousins heucherella with similar foliage and light foamy summer flowers. Asters are delightful flowering perennials with dainty, daisy-like flowers in a range of bright and pastel colours, while hardy geraniums are well-known reliable stalwarts of the flower garden, adding colour from late summer through early autumn.
