Fragrant herb plants
As well as their culinary uses and superior flavour to supermarket-bought herbs, many herb plants are also well suited to bringing a delicious fragrance, whether it be into a specifically designated kitchen garden, front border near the entrance to your home or simply a windowsill, window box or balcony container. Besides cooking, fragrant herbs can be used for potpourri, lotions, oils, or simply to enjoy a heady whiff as you pass them by in the garden. Herbs have aromatic leaves that will fill your garden with fragrance, especially in the late morning when the sun begins to heat up. Some of the most fragrant are basil, rosemary, sage and mint. Growing herbs, or even creating a herb garden, is easier than you think. All you need is good light conditions in a free, well-drained soil or container. As an essential ingredient in many recipes, growing your own means a fresh supply of aromatic flavourings is never more than a few steps away and they’re guaranteed to taste better than anything you’ll find on the supermarket shelves.
