Climbing plants for a east facing wall
East facing walls receive some sunlight in the morning as the sun rises but are then cast into shadow for the afternoon. They’re often considered problem spots by gardeners given their lack of light, particularly in the winter. They do, however, receive more light than a woodland setting and with careful plant selection and planning there is no reason you cannot beautify a east facing wall with the fabulous flowers and foliage of select climbing plants. Well suited varieties include ivy, virginia creeper, clematis montana, clematis armandii, several varieties of lonicera and climbing hydrangea. Ivy is a vigorous, self-clinging, evergreen climber with distinctive, lobed leaves which may be plain or variegated, depending on the variety. They use their aerial roots to cling and climb up fences, sheds, walls or anything else with a textured surface. Clematis Armandii is a large, early flowering, vigorous, evergreen climber, with dark glossy green leaves and saucer shaped, scented white single flowers. Clematis Montata is a group 1 clematis with sweetly scented blooms and bronze young foliage that can cover substantial buildings or sturdy fences, telegraph poles, or even old tree trunks.
