A tough, reliable, bushy evergreen shrub with a compact, low-growing habit and stiff, glossy, mid-green, needle-like foliage that becomes attractively tipped with creamy-pink in spring. It has delicate, slender branches and produces an abundance of stunning, urn-shaped, bright lilac-pink flowers which are produced in spike-like racemes and gradually darken with age.
Perfect for planting in bold drifts with other heathers, it's great for adding a splash of colour to the garden around Christmas time when little else is in bloom. Its ability to flower abundantly over a long period of time has made it one of the most widely grown of all heathers, despite being an old variety.
Cut back after flowering to maintain a neat, compact growth habit but don't be tempted to over-fertilise because it prefers a rocky, unimproved soil.
Buying Heathers from Jacksons Nurseries
Unlike many garden centres, supermarkets and some nurseries here at Jacksons Nurseries we sell the majority of our stock all year round. Our stock is for the most part grown outdoors making it far hardier than those grown under glass and/or only sold ‘In Season’.
Here at Jacksons Nurseries we would favour a hardy outdoor grown plant every time. They are far less likely to suffer from the shock of being planted in colder conditions and they will begin to establish more rapidly the following spring. This can mean that they don’t look like a ‘picture perfect’ plant when purchased out of season but with the correct care and a little time you’ll have a wonderful plant to enjoy for many years to come.
