Sow seeds thinly, 1cm (1/2in) deep in pre-watered rows, and cover with a little soil. Allow 15cm (6in) between rows. Carrots do best in light stone free soils.

Leaf iconThinning

As seedlings develop, thin initially to 2cm (1in) apart. Later thin again to about 5cm (2in) apart. Thinninngs are delicious cooked as finger carrots or raw in salads. Thinning is best kept to a minimum as crushed leaves attract carrot root fly. Keep soil moist after thinning.
