Acer Campestre Field Maple Tree
AKA Common Maple, Dog Oak, Common Elder, and Hedge Maple
The only native maple to the UK, Acer Campestre is a common sight in parks and ornamental gardens due to its compact stature and resistance to pollution. The traditional maple-shaped leaves are pale green before fading to pleasing soft yellows in the autumn before falling. Bark is light brown and flakey, developing into a cork-like appearance. It produces yellow-green flowers at the same time as the foliage with winged fruits coming later in the season. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Field Maple reaches around 7 metres tall and 4 metres wide at 10 years. Annual growth rate 40-60cm.
